A garage is commonly built with a slab, masonry walls and a roof intended to protect a car or stored items, not to hold a comfortable indoor temperature. The shell may be exposed to wind and damp, the floor may sit below the house and the wall between garage and home may have a different construction. A conversion therefore needs a joined-up insulation design rather than a single roll of insulation fixed to the easiest surface.
The aim is to create a dry, warm and continuous envelope without losing more headroom or floor area than necessary. The correct build-up depends on the existing walls, moisture condition, roof, floor level and the room's use. A building-control designer or competent contractor should set out the detail before materials are ordered.
Begin with the existing slab. Check its level, moisture protection, cracks and relationship with the house floor. If the garage floor is lower, the new build-up may need insulation, a damp-proof layer, screed or a suitable dry system. Raising it too far can reduce headroom or create awkward steps; raising it too little can leave a cold floor and a weak thermal junction at the perimeter.
Do not assume a dry-looking slab is free from damp. Moisture can appear after the room is heated, and floor coverings can hide a problem until the conversion is finished. Ask for the proposed thicknesses, finished floor level and threshold detail in writing.
Wall insulation can be formed with a framed lining, insulated plasterboard or another designed system. Each option takes space and changes how sockets, skirtings, doors and windows are fitted. Single-skin walls, retaining walls and walls close to the ground need extra care because trapping moisture behind an internal lining can create a more serious problem.
At the roof, insulation must work with the existing structure and ventilation strategy. A flat roof has different risks from a pitched roof, especially where insulation reduces the ventilated void. The wall-to-roof junction, corners, window reveals and the connection to the house are common cold bridges. The installer should show how those junctions are treated, not just name the insulation product.
Not by itself. Damp can come from rainwater, a failed gutter, ground levels, a defective damp-proof course, plumbing or condensation. Insulation changes surface temperatures, so moisture movement needs to be understood before the wall is closed. Ventilation is part of the same design: a warm room with no way to remove moisture can still develop mould.
There is no universal answer. A narrow single garage can lose noticeable width once both walls and the floor are upgraded. That affects furniture, wheelchair access, door swings and whether a bedroom still has the layout you expected. Measure the proposed finished dimensions, not just the current shell, and position services around the final lining.
Ask for the floor, wall and roof build-ups, product or system, finished floor level, ventilation approach and treatment of window reveals and junctions. Also ask who checks the work before it is covered and what happens if the existing wall or slab is unsuitable. A low quote that omits the difficult junctions may not be cheaper once the room has to be made comfortable.
